1. Power Source: Use a vertical external characteristic power source with direct current (DC) and positive polarity (electrode connected to the negative terminal).
2. Material Suitability: Ideal for welding thin plates under 6mm, providing aesthetically pleasing weld seams with minimal deformation.
3. Shielding Gas: Use 99.99% pure argon. Flow rates vary based on current: 8-10 L/min for 50-150A, 12-15 L/min for 150-250A.
4. Tungsten Electrode Length: Optimal length protruding from the nozzle is 4-5mm. For tight areas, 2-3mm is ideal, while deep grooves require 5-6mm. The nozzle should generally be within 5mm of the workpiece.
5. Surface Preparation: Ensure the welding area is free of rust, oil, or contaminants to prevent porosity.
6. Arc Length: Maintain a 2-4mm arc length for carbon steel, and 1-3mm for stainless steel to ensure effective shielding.
7. Backside Protection: Apply gas shielding to the backside of the weld to prevent oxidation.
8. Welding Angles: Maintain an 80-85° angle between the tungsten electrode and the workpiece, and a near 0° angle between the filler rod and the workpiece.
9. Wind Protection and Ventilation: Use wind barriers in windy conditions and ensure proper ventilation indoors.
