Generation of Residual Stress
After mechanical processing, the surface layer of a workpiece typically contains residual stress. Residual compressive stress can enhance the wear resistance and fatigue strength of the surface under tensile stress, whereas residual tensile stress has the opposite effect. If the tensile stress exceeds the fatigue strength limit of the workpiece material, cracks may develop on the surface, accelerating damage.
Methods for Eliminating Residual Stress
1. Natural Aging
Natural aging involves exposing parts to the outdoors for several months or even years to stabilize their dimensional accuracy. This method has been widely adopted, with extensive experimental research and production practice demonstrating its effectiveness in stabilizing the dimensional accuracy of castings.
2. Thermal Aging
Stress-relief annealing is commonly used, significantly reducing residual stress and stabilizing dimensional accuracy. When components are heated to 400-700°C, they exhibit substantial plasticity, and this temperature range is known as the elastic transformation temperature. Nowadays, thermal aging is more commonly used to save time.
