Enhancing Stability in Spiral Welded Pipes

Spiral welded pipes, also known as spiral welded steel pipes, are fabricated utilizing an automated dual wire submerged arc welding process. They are crafted from coiled steel strips and commonly formed using warm extrusion and the dual wire double-sided automatic submerged arc welding technique, resulting in a distinct spiral weld seam on the surface.


To ensure the stability and integrity of spiral welded pipes, several considerations must be taken into account:


Storage Considerations for Spiral Welded Pipe:


Small and medium-sized steel products, including bars, rebars, wires, and medium-sized steel pipes, can be stored in well-ventilated shelters, provided proper covering and cushioning are utilized.

Certain smaller steel materials, thin steel plates, strips, silicon steel sheets, small diameter or thin-wall steel pipes, as well as various cold-rolled and cold-drawn steel products, along with high-value, corrosion-prone metal items, should be stored indoors.

Warehousing facilities for spiral steel pipe products should be located in clean, well-drained areas away from industrial sites producing harmful gases or dust. The storage area should be free from weeds and debris, maintaining cleanliness for the steel materials.


Outdoor Stacking:

Large steel products such as structural steel, rails, steel plates, large diameter steel pipes, and forgings can be stacked outdoors.

However, it's crucial to avoid stacking materials with corrosive properties such as acids, alkalis, salts, or cement alongside steel items. Different types of steel should be segregated to prevent corrosion and contamination.


Warehouse Selection and Design:

Warehouses should be chosen based on geographical conditions, typically opting for conventional enclosed warehouses with roofs, walls, tight doors, and windows. Adequate ventilation systems should also be installed to maintain optimal storage conditions.


Protective Measures for Spiral Welded Pipe Equipment:


Acid Pickling:

Acid pickling is commonly employed using chemical or electrolytic methods. For pipe corrosion prevention, chemical acid pickling is preferred, effectively removing scale, rust, and old coatings. While chemical cleaning achieves a certain level of cleanliness and roughness on the surface, it tends to produce pollution and shallow etching patterns.


Shot Blasting:

Shot blasting involves high-power motors driving blasting blades at high speeds, propelling abrasives such as steel shot, steel grit, wire segments, and minerals onto the surface of spiral steel pipes. This process not only eliminates rust, oxides, and contaminants but also achieves the desired average roughness due to the aggressive impact and frictional forces exerted by the abrasives.


Manual Rust Removal:

Utilizing tools like wire brushes for manually polishing the surface of steel materials can effectively remove loose or protruding scale, rust, and welding slag. Manual rust removal achieves a surface cleanliness level of Sa2 with hand tools and Sa3 with power tools. However, if the steel surface is covered with firmly adhered oxide scales, the results of manual rust removal may not meet the required surface roughness depth for corrosion prevention applications.
