One of the factors that determine the chemical composition and performance of welded pipe's weld metal is the welding process performance and chemical metallurgical performance of flux. Different flux, but using the same welding wire and welding parameters, the performance of weld will be different. Whether it is low carbon steel or low alloy steel, the welding wire can be reasonably combined with different flux.

General requirements for fluxes

The flux should have good metallurgical properties, equipped with appropriate welding wire and welding process, the weld metal can obtain appropriate chemical composition and good mechanical properties, with good processability, stable arc combustion, good weld surface forming, and less harmful gas during welding.

The flux should have a certain particle size and particle strength to facilitate multiple recycling. The particle size is divided into ordinary particle size and fine-grained flux size. The ordinary particle size of flux is 2.5 ~ 0.45 mm, which is used for ordinary submerged arc welding. The fine-grained flux size is 1.25 ~ 0.28 mm, which is used for fine wire or semi-automatic submerged arc welding.

The flux shall have low water content and good moisture resistance. The content of mechanical inclusions in the flux shall not exceed 0.30% of the mass fraction of the flux. The flux shall have low sulfur and phosphorus content, generally sulfur ≤ 0.06% and phosphorus ≤ 0.08%.

he welding wire is selected according to the type of welding steel and the requirements of welding joint performance, the welding wire matching the strength of base metal is selected for low alloy high strength steel and low carbon steel, and the welding wire matching the composition of base metal is selected for stainless steel and heat resistant steel. When surfacing, the welding wire and alloy system with similar composition shall be selected according to the technical requirements, and the appropriate flux shall be selected. The appropriate combination of welding wire and flux shall also be selected according to the technical requirements and production conditions. If necessary, the corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, crack resistance and process performance of weld metal shall be tested to evaluate whether the selected welding material is suitable.
